À 12 h 52, heure de Yangon, un fort tremblement de terre d'une magnitude de 7,7 a frappé le centre du Myanmar, causant d'importants dégâts aux infrastructures dans tout le pays. Le tremblement de terre a également touché les pays voisins du Myanmar, notamment la Thaïlande, le Bangladesh, le Laos et la Chine. L'épicentre du tremblement de terre se trouvait à environ 17,2 km de la ville de Mandalay, dans la région nord du Myanmar, qui compte environ 1,5 million d'habitants. Les secousses ont sévèrement touché les régions de Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Magway et Sagaing.
