A las 12:52 PM hora de Yangon, un fuerte terremoto de magnitud 7,7 sacudió el centro de Myanmar, causando importantes daños en las infraestructuras de todo el país. El seísmo también afectó a los países vecinos de Myanmar, entre ellos Tailandia, Bangladesh, Laos y China. El epicentro del seísmo se situó a unos 17,2 km de la ciudad de Mandalay, en la región septentrional de Myanmar, que tiene una población aproximada de 1,5 millones de habitantes. Los temblores afectaron gravemente a las regiones de Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Magway y Sagaing.
