في تمام الساعة 12:52 ظهراً بتوقيت يانغون، ضرب زلزال قوي بلغت قوته 7.7 درجة وسط ميانمار، مما تسبب في أضرار كبيرة في البنية التحتية في جميع أنحاء البلاد. كما أثر الزلزال على الدول المجاورة لميانمار، بما في ذلك تايلاند وبنغلاديش ولاوس والصين. كان مركز الزلزال على بُعد حوالي 17.2 كم من مدينة ماندالاي في المنطقة الشمالية من ميانمار، والتي يبلغ عدد سكانها حوالي 1.5 مليون نسمة. وقد أثرت الهزات بشدة على مناطق ماندالاي وناي بيي تاو وماغواي وساغاينغ.
